Hidden Report Reveals Ministers Exaggerated UK Fracking Boom

Published in Oil Industry News on Monday, 12 February 2018

Graphic for News Item: Hidden Report Reveals Ministers Exaggerated UK Fracking Boom

A hidden report for Britain’s most senior ministers has revealed that the promise of a UK shale gas boom has been dramatically exaggerated by government and fracking companies.

Government has known for almost two years that the number of wells likely to flow shale gas from fractures deep beneath the earth will be just a fraction of the 4,000 wells quoted publicly by ministers in support of the divisive industry. The unseen documents surfaced earlier this month after an investigative arm of Greenpeace uncovered the Government’s shale gas rethink through a Freedom of Information request.

The 2016 report, undertaken for the Cabinet Office, was not released despite revealing that less than 4pc of the shale gas wells predicted in public reports would be likely to emerge by 2025. The report estimates that only 155 shale wells are likely in the UK.

Only two years earlier reports predicted that the shale industry would drill 400 wells every year at its peak, reaching 4,000 wells by 2032.

The figures appeared in a major report from EY, which built on earlier estimates from the Institute of Directors. It was used by government and frackers to convince the public that a shale revolution could spur £33bn of investment and create over 64,000 jobs.

Dan Lewis, who helped produce the IoD research, blamed “disappointing” progress on planning delays, which have slowed site appraisals, combined with weak gas market prices.
