Crew of Stranded Ship Not Paid Wages Months After Sale

Graphic for News Item: Crew of Stranded Ship Not Paid Wages Months After Sale

The crew of an Indian supply ship stranded in Scotland for more than a year are still owed £670,000 in unpaid wages, it has emerged.

The Malaviya Seven was sold in November after being held at Aberdeen Harbour for 13 months.

Her crew were able to return home after the deal was agreed but they have still not been paid.

Aberdeen Sheriff Court said the money will be released after a hearing later this month.

Aberdeen Harbour, which may have been due up to £100,000 in fees, has given up its claim.

The situation forced several seafarers to take out loans to support their families.

Chief officer Bamadev Swain, one of the last crew members to leave Scotland, told STV news in August: "I have had a very unpleasant and miserable time.

"I'm very sad inside because my wife never thought she would have to face these problems.

"We've taken loans with very high rates of interest. All the money she had saved is gone."

The Malaviya Seven was sold to Norwegian firm Fruholmen AS and renamed Sartor. She will reportedly be used for emergency response and ROV work.
