Graphic for News Item: BREAKING: North Sea Platform Abandoned Over Fears it Could Topple Into the Sea

Canadian Natural Resources have initiated a complete down-man of their Ninian South Platform over fears that the platform may not be able to withstand forecasted weather on Thursday the 7th of December.

Oil and Gas People has been advised that the concerns come after it was identified that the brace on the platforms jacket is defective, meaning that the forecasted 16m waves on Thursday have the potential to cause a complete structural failure, with the worst case scenario being that the platform could topple into the sea.

159 workers are currently on board the platform with plans for all workers to be evacuated being implemented.

The Ninian South Platform is located 240 miles from Aberdeen in the Northern North Sea. CNR advised that no other installations are expected to be affected."

A spokesperson for CNR gave the following statement:

"CNR International (UK) Limited advises that, due to an adverse weather forecast during the coming days, it has commenced a precautionary down-man of non-essential personnel from its Ninian Southern platform. This is in accordance with existing procedures developed to safely manage the structural integrity of the Ninian Southern jacket.

CNR International has been carrying out remedial work on the platform’s jacket structure and assurance activities are ongoing to confirm their effectiveness. There are storm conditions forecast for the coming weekend, therefore, in order to ensure the safety of all personnel on board, the company has taken the decision to partially down-man Ninian Southern as a precaution.

The safety of the personnel on board the platform is of paramount importance for the Company."
