Job Description

Global provider of subsea production control systems expertise to the Oil & Gas industry, has an exciting opportunity for a Senior manager to lead their Controls software team, to be based in Reading. 

Our client’s UK Application Engineering Team based in Aberdeen and Reading is responsible for delivering multi-disciplined engineering for our subsea controls systems and system architecture to all Aker Delivery Centres. In that capacity our team of mechanical, electrical, electronic, software and system engineers provide FEED and detail engineering into Front End and Projects, support to our manufacturing facilities, the provision of diagnostic and fault analysis and front line global support for the controls product portfolio. 

Reporting to the Vice President Application Engineering, key responsibilities for the role will include;

  • Leadership of software engineering from Tender through initial Engineering, manufacture and to product delivery.
  • Take responsibility for all software application engineering activities in the Products UK delivery centre
  • Be the point person accountable for addressing key issues regarding quality, budget and on time delivery of application engineering scopes of work to key stakeholders
  • Allocate & manage resources to meet the demands of the business.
  • Capacity planning and recruitment for the team.
  • Carry out subordinate appraisals and ensure development plans in place.
  • Ensure succession plans are in place for all key staff.
  • Provide guidance, coaching & mentoring to all Engineers.
  • Provide application engineering support and direction to other Delivery Centres, as required

Suitable candidates should have the following qualifications, experience and attributes;

  • Degree in Electronic, Controls or Software Engineering
  • Demonstrable, relevant Controls System & Product experience
  • A proven track record in the development, delivery and support of Controls equipment in Subsea Production Systems
  • Demonstrable relevant Systems or Project Engineering experience preferably within the Oil and Gas industry
  • Ability to Communicate well, lead, motivate and develop our people.

    - Apprentices are employed from the outset and follow the Science Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Alliance (SEMTA) Modern Apprenticeship framework starting with a Level 2 at an EAL approved training centre followed by a Level 3 within EXPRO. This vocational programme is combined with a third component, Further Education, which together adds up to 2 vocational awards (SVQ Level 2 and 3), an educational qualification and on successful completion, the SEMTA Modern Apprenticeship (MA) Certificate.
    YEAR 1: Typically comprises of the trainee attending an EAL approved training centre, completing SVQ Level 2 and obtaining an educational qualification, National Certificate (NC) in Mechanical Engineering.
    YEAR 2 to 4: Are spent within a pre-assigned Expro (Aberdeen) Product Line workshop maintenance facility completing on the job, core, specific and mandatory Expro's training. During this period apprentices are continually working towards an SVQ Level 3 in an Engineering Practice at SCQF Level 6 (monitored and assessed by an EAL approved Training Officer) and on successful completion, being awarded the SEMTA Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship Certification.
    In addition Expro expect the trainee to attend day release at a designated further education college for a minimum of 2 years to obtain a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in an Engineering Practice and in some instances with sponsoring a Diploma (HND).

Responsibilities Whilst all work will be undertaken under the supervision of a senior member of the design team the job holder will be expected to show initiative and self-reliance. • Receive the Clients brief/remit, formulate the scope of works and develop the design philosophy. • Provide ‘best value’ working design solutions to technical problems and ensure the timely delivery of information. • Working knowledge of electronic design packages available within the design office, including AutoCAD and Hevacomp, but also be capable of undertaking calculations by hand. • Knowledge of the current standards is expected for the electrical building services systems used in the industry. • Capable of using AutoCAD 2d to produce detailed design drawings suitable for construction. • Experience of Building Information Modelling systems is preferred but training will be given. • Working knowledge of Statutory Regulations and Codes of Practice. • Working knowledge of the CDM regulations and will be responsible for ensuring that designs are compliant. You will also be required to produce Designers Risk Assessments for projects. • Working knowledge of low energy technologies and requirements of Building Regulations. • Produce specifications for the works. • Undertake site surveys and compile reports as many projects will be integrated with existing buildings / infrastructure. • Assess existing utilities for capacity to extend.
