Super Puma Lands Safely After Offshore Emergency
A Bristows EC225LP Super Puma landed safely at Aberdeen International Airport this morning after having declared an emergency while on a routine crew change flight.
The Super Puma was approx. 15 minutes north of Fraserburgh when it started transmitting on emergency frequency 7700 while descending from 4000 feet to just over 1000 feet in the space of a few of minutes.
The frequency 7700 is used to alert base and other aircraft of a general emergency on board and would give the aircraft priority with air traffic control. It is understood the aircraft was transmitting on the frequency for 10 - 15 minutes before returning to a normal landing code and making a standard approach to Aberdeen International Airport, where it landed safely just before 9.30 this morning.
A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "A cowling warning light came on in the helicopter.
"it was carrying 7 people on board.
A spokesman for Bristow Helicopters confirmed that the aircraft was involved in a "return to base" but wouldn't give further details at this stage.
We will update this story as more information comes available.
