Oil and Gas Vessel Involved in Offshore Rescue Attempt
An oil and gas standby vessel, Caledonian Victory, this morning sent out its “fast rescue” boat in response to a mayday from the Banff registered Beryl fishing vessel after a crew member fell overboard.
Shetland Coastguard's Sumburgh based helicopter airlifted the man after he was pulled from the water 20 miles west of Shetland by the fast rescue craft. The man was transferred to the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick but police Scotland has since confirmed he died.
It is thought the man was in the water for over an hour before the fast rescue craft located him. Police advised no name would be released until next of kin have been informed.
