NGIF Accelerator, the non-profit arm of venture capital firm NGIF Capital, has announced a funding of $73,500 (CAD 100,000) to support the launch of a pioneering carbon capture bench-scale prototype development project by Calgary-based Vortis Carbon Corp. The project showcases a groundbreaking approach that holds the potential to simplify and reduce the costs associated with carbon capture, contributing to a more sustainable and cost-effective solution.
NGIF is providing funding through its Industry Grants program to Vortis Carbon Corp., enabling the development of a spinning disc separator (SDS) technology. Vortis's SDS employs motion and vortices to separate carbon dioxide based on its molecular weight, demonstrating advantages over traditional carbon capture methods. The funds will facilitate the commercial demonstration of the technology at scale with selected industry partners in Alberta in 2025, with a planned commercial rollout in 2026.
Vortis's SDS technology represents a significant advancement in carbon capture, offering the potential to achieve substantial reductions in energy requirements and costs associated with removing carbon from flue gas emissions. NGIF emphasizes that this technology presents a promising solution to one of the most pressing greenhouse gas management challenges faced by industries today.
The Industry Grants program, led by NGIF, offers non-dilutive grants to fund early-stage startups for technology development and field demonstration. Focused on de-risking pre-commercial technology solutions, the program aims to enhance the environmental performance of the natural gas sector. NGIF Accelerator works towards de-risking and accelerating technology development by supporting startups through pilot projects, field trials, and industry validation.
Timothy Egan, President and CEO of the Canadian Gas Association and Chair of NGIF Capital Corporation, expressed satisfaction with the Industry Grants program, stating it aligns with the vision to bring the entire natural gas value chain together to support cleantech development. The initiative supports technologies like Vortis, contributing to enhanced environmental and economic performance for the sector.
NGIF Accelerator's funding of Vortis Carbon Corp.'s innovative carbon capture technology represents a significant step forward in advancing sustainable solutions. By supporting pioneering projects like this, NGIF aims to accelerate the development and implementation of technologies that enhance environmental performance in the natural gas sector. Vortis's SDS technology stands as a promising contribution to addressing carbon emissions, underscoring the commitment to affordable, reliable, and clean energy services within the industry.
