Mexican state-owned oil and gas company Pemex is facing mounting criticism as a large oil spill has been reported near the site of a deadly explosion at one of its natural gas platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. The spill was detected by scientist Guillermo Tamburini Beliveau on July 4, a few days before the tragic blast off the coast of Mexico's Campeche. Satellite images reveal that the spill has spread over an area of approximately 400 square kilometers (154 square miles), raising concerns about its environmental impact.

Pemex confirmed the existence of the spill but downplayed its size, stating that most of the oil had been immediately recovered, and the leak is now under control. However, independent experts and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) assert that the spill is much larger than Pemex claims and exceeds twice the size of Guadalajara. The lack of transparency and prompt action in addressing the spill has deepened concerns among NGOs, including Greenpeace, which have called for urgent and effective response measures.
