Portuguese oil and gas company Galp has entered into a contract with Dutch firm Fugro to conduct a comprehensive environmental and geophysical survey off the coast of Namibia. Recognized for its remote location, challenging conditions, and ultra-deep waters, this site is of strategic importance for future energy operations in the region.
Fugro's selection was based on its advanced technology and proven expertise in marine geophysical and environmental surveys, ensuring efficient and accurate data collection. This capability empowers Galp to make well-informed decisions for the safe execution of energy operations in this challenging maritime environment.
The fieldwork for the survey was successfully concluded earlier this month, reaching impressive depths of 2,000 meters. The Fugro Venturer, a specialized geophysical vessel, played a key role in the project, collecting sediment samples for detailed environmental and chemical analysis. In addition, an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) was deployed to capture high-resolution seabed video footage.
Fugro went beyond standard survey procedures by acquiring in situ full ocean depth water profiles and water samples. This extensive data collection aims to assess the current biodiversity of the region. The geodata obtained through the survey will be instrumental in identifying potentially sensitive habitats, advancing knowledge about remote seamounts, and contributing to informed project planning and resource management.
Beyond the ecological aspects, Fugro's geophysical survey will provide critical insights into the underwater landscape. This information is pivotal for ensuring the safe movement and operation of offshore assets within the designated area.
Rob Hawkins, Fugro’s Commercial Director for Africa, highlighted the company's commitment to environmental preservation. He emphasized that the survey represents a significant step toward achieving sustainable and efficient offshore energy developments while minimizing adverse impacts on the marine environment.
This collaboration between Galp and Fugro showcases the latter's proficiency in conducting complex offshore surveys, particularly in challenging environments. The acquired data will play a vital role in supporting Galp's decision-making processes for safe and responsible energy operations in the Namibian offshore region.
