Coastguard helicopter returns to base with gearbox problem
The stand-by coastguard helicopter was forced to return to Sumburgh yesterday afternoon after suffering low gearbox pressure.
A pan-pan, was declared when the Rescue 103 S-92 aircraft suffered mechanical problems while on exercise 15 minutes west of the isles - the term 'pan-pan' is used to signifying urgency in a non-life threatening emergency.
Both Lerwick and Aith lifeboats were launched, coastguard teams were mobilised and the duty helicopter 102 was put on stand-by.
However 103 was able to land safely at Sumburgh.
