A cargo ship carrying nearly 3,000 cars, including 25 electric vehicles, caught fire in the North Sea, resulting in one crew member's death and several others being injured. The inferno erupted on Tuesday night, believed to have been caused by an electric car on board the vessel. As the fire spread uncontrollably, some crew members were forced to jump overboard, leading to a swift rescue operation by boats and helicopters coordinated by the Dutch coast guard.
The cargo ship in question was the Panama-registered Fremantle Highway, en route from Germany to Port Said in Egypt when the incident occurred, sailing approximately 27 kilometers north of the Dutch island of Ameland. Despite the crew's brave attempts, they were unable to extinguish the flames, and the situation escalated rapidly.
Injured crew members were airlifted to nearby medical facilities, suffering from smoke inhalation or injuries sustained during the evacuation process. Meanwhile, the ship continued to burn as authorities assessed the situation.
Footage and images taken from the shore depicted a thick plume of gray smoke billowing over the sea, emanating from the distressed vessel. Fortunately, the 199-meter ship was successfully towed out of shipping lanes early on Wednesday, ensuring the safety of other vessels in the area.
Shoei Kisen Kaisha, a Japanese ship leasing company that manages the Fremantle Highway, has not yet provided a statement on the incident.
This fire incident is the latest in a series of similar events involving car carriers. Only a few weeks ago, two New Jersey firefighters lost their lives, and five others were injured while battling a fierce blaze on a cargo ship carrying hundreds of vehicles. Another incident in February the previous year resulted in the destruction of thousands of luxury cars on a ship near Portugal's Azores islands. Such incidents underscore the need for robust safety measures in the transportation of cars by sea.
