Job Description

A global oil and gas company is seeking to appoint a Lead Investigator to sit within its corporate EHS function. This highly visible role will involve significant travel (up to 50%) globally, visiting operational sites where major incidents have occurred. This will involve thoroughly and knowledgeably investigating serious incidents, gathering all relevant information and delivering expert incident investigation reports. It is expected that candidates will be degree educated in an engineering or technical discipline and be a certified safety practitioner. Although oil and gas experience is desirable, it is possible that candidates from similar high risk industries will be considered. Only candidates with substantial experience within incident investigation with a demonstrable track record of delivery will be considered.

    Our client is currently seeking an experienced Fire Engineer to support the Head of Civil Engineering in developing fire strategies and appropriate fire safety designs, including the specification and design of fire detection and alarm systems. They will also be responsible for resolving fire protection engineering issues by applying accepted principles, codes and standards whilst critically reviewing design drawings and documents.

    The successful Fire Engineer will develop holistic fire strategies and performance based designs supported by fire and evacuation modelling, risk analysis and cost benefit analysis as appropriate. They will also provide guidance to the Fire Protection Design team and will approve all Fire protection deliverables including providing technical standards and specifications.

    The successful candidate will have experience of providing fire safety advice in the Nuclear sector and in a conventional environment. They will have experience of the management of fire safety on construction sites and will have interfaced with Fire Services. They will have a strong understanding of the appropriate legislation and regulations. This is an exciting opportunity to implement the principle of fire science to real projects.

    - Supervise work of other Fire Protection Engineers assigned to the jobs. Review the design drawings and documents.

    - Provide guidance to the project Fire Protection Design Team

    - Approving all Fire protection deliverables.

    - Ensure work is compliant with Basis of Design (BOD) & Project Execution Plan (PEP).

    - Coordinate with all disciplines (as necessary) in the preparation and development of the deliverables and ensure that other disciplines' input is incorporated.

    - Provide technical standards/specifications

    - Supervise work of other Fire protection Engineers or suppliers

    - Ensure detailed checks of all outputs produced by others (including calculations) are undertaken;

    - Develop fire strategies and appropriate fire safety designs, including the specification and design of fire detection and alarm systems.

    - Critically review the design drawings and documents, equipment specifications/data sheets and materials of Fire Protection equipment and components for acceptance.

    - Resolve Fire Protection engineering issues by applying accepted principles, codes and standards.

    - Provide the planning, coordination & supervision of the production of Mechanical Deliverables as well as overall coordination for preparation of Deliverables list for proposals.

    Skills & Experience

    - Hold a degree or equivalent qualification in a suitable engineering or science subject and have chartered engineer status with registration with a relevant institution such as the Institution of Fire Engineers or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

    - Experience of developing holistic fire strategies and performance-based designs, supported by fire and evacuation modelling, risk analysis and cost benefit analysis as appropriate.

    - Experience of implementing the principle of fire science to real projects

    - Experience of providing fire safety advice in the Nuclear sector and in a conventional environment is essential

    - Experience of management of fire safety on construction sites, through commissioning activities and into operations

    - Experience with interface with Fire Services (private and public)

    - Experience with technical management of supply chain providing both consultancy and implementation services

    - Experience of communicating and presenting design solutions to a wide audience consisting both technical and non-technical stakeholders

    - Experience and knowledge appropriate legislation, regulations, national and international standards

    - Understanding of the requirements of insurers and appropriate life/asset protection

    - Knowledge of Fire Water Network and Fire water pumping systems including fire water pumps, storage tanks etc.

    - Knowledge of Water Spray Systems for all applications including, spheres, above ground vessels, transformers, storage tanks, flammable and combustible pumps etc.

    - Knowledge of relevant analysis, design and specification software/techniques in addition to Hydraulic Calculations for all water based fire protection system including sprinkler systems, water spray systems, fire pump sizing, fire water network analysis, foam systems

    - NEBOSH Fire Certificate is desirable

    - Confederation of Fire Protection Association (CFPA) Diploma is desirable
