  I worked as control systems engineer in the design, construction, integration and commission of Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) a 10m class telescope being built in Sutherland in the Northern Cape. I had to design the electrical reticulation including HV and LV from point of supply by Eskom to the distribution board including the design of the control system for the emergency generator and UPS. To make the control of the complex telescope system easier we designed it in such away that a single man-machine interface will be able to control the entire telescope via a LAN network. The LAN network that would be used to integrate subsystems computers that make up the telescope was designed from a concept phase and it communicate over LAN network with 100MB/s bandwidth. Other duties also involve defining and preparing specifications of electrical and control system design of the subsystems that makes up the telescope. The subsystems that I worked on were the telescope structure control and drive system and Tracker control system. These two systems required precision control to order of microns. I also was involved in the tender process to appoint contractors for some part of the project. Do some programming using LabVIEW software from National Instruments. The project requires project management expertise whereby I had to manage some contractors who are responsible for certain subsystems from conceptual, design, manufacture, installation up to commissioning and testing. I was required to prepare acceptance-testing document, which will be used to do testing of each subsystem to see that it conforms to specifications. Having completed the subsystem I am required to generate a user manual and data packs for the operators and technicians who are responsible for each subsystem of the telescope and also provide training on how to use these subsystems that make up the telescope system. From a system level, I had to write the telescope system acceptance testing document which is used to check the conformance of the designed system to the user requirements referred to as validation process.

  Working within the Maintenance department, responsible for the design and implementation of a Condition Monitoring programme to cover a majority of the rotating and static equipment from offshore through the LNG processing to the LNG loading. The programme was designed to utilise vibration analysis, lube oil analysis, infrared thermography, motor phase current analysis, corrosion monitoring, etc, operating under a ‘Risk Based’ Maintenance strategy. Also responsible for the writing of the relevant procedures and work instructions for the Condition Monitoring function to comply with both ISO 9002 and the Maintenance Strategy. Used SAP as a tool for controlling the Condition Monitoring Group’s work and used the RTIS and LIMS for the monitoring of process parameters and Laboratory data. The Condition Monitoring group was a small team within the Rotating Equipment Group. Also involved in reliability monitoring, analysis and reporting on the critical equipment and in several defect elimination projects.
